Halo live-action TV series confirmed

The Xbox game series will get a 10-episode season.

A TV series based on the video game Halo has been announced.

US TV network Showtime (which has previously hosted shows like Twin Peaks: The Return and Californication) has greenlit the project with backing from Steven Spielberg’s production company Amblin.

Halo has been optioned for a number of films and TV series in the past, with Peter Jackson previously owning the rights to make a movie.

Now, it appears like fans of the series will finally see Master Chief come alive on the screen with a 10-episode season ordered by Showtime.

Kyle Killen is set to act as showrunner with Rise of the Planet of the Apes writer Rupert Wyatt attached as an executive producer.

Despite previous issues that stalled the project, filming is set to start this year, with a 2019 release date stated by the producers.

Halo is one of gaming’s biggest franchises and sees players take on the role of Master Chief, a genetically enhanced space marine who must stop extraterrestrial cult The Covenant from destroying humanity.

Showtime president David Nevins said that the series would be a treat for science-fiction fans.

Halo is our most ambitious series ever, and we expect audiences who have been anticipating it for years to be thoroughly rewarded. In the history of television, there simply has never been enough great science fiction.

“Kyle Killen’s scripts are thrilling, expansive and provocative, Rupert Wyatt is a wonderful, world-building director, and their vision of Halo will enthrall fans of the game while also drawing the uninitiated into a world of complex characters that populate this unique universe.”

Whilst it is not yet confirmed whether the series will be a direct adaptation of the games, details have emerged that suggest that it will focus on the war between humanity and The Covenant, meaning it’s unlikely to be an offshoot.
