Hannibal creator steps down from new Star Trek series

Screenwriter Bryan Fuller has voluntarily stepped down from the upcoming show.

Much-lauded screenwriter Bryan Fuller has voluntarily stepped down as the day-to-day showrunner of upcoming TV series Star Trek: Discovery.

Instead, Fuller will assume the role of executive producer where he will continue to be heavily involved with the writing of the show.

Fellow Star Trek: Discovery screenwriters Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, who also worked with Fuller on his critically acclaimed 2007 comedy series Pushing Daises, will now share the joint responsibility of showrunner.

According to Variety, the relationship between Fuller and CBS has become “strained” due to them having to push the series premiere date back from January 2017 to May 2017 and Fuller's very busy schedule.

He's currently serving as a showrunner on the upcoming mythical drama American Gods and is also working on creating a reboot of Steven Spielberg's 1987 fantasy series Amazing Stories.

CBS have brought academy award-winning director Akiva Goldsman on board in an as yet unrevealed important creative role in an effort to meet the massive expectations currently dogging the project, which will be the first Star Trek TV show since Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005.

“Bryan is a brilliant creative talent and passionate Star Trek fan who has helped us chart an exciting course for the series,” said a spokesperson for CBS, “we are all committed to seeing this vision through and look forward to the premiere in May 2017”.
