HBO debuts first trailer for The Plot Against America
The series is set in an alternate reality where famous aviator Charles Lindebergh becomes President.
HBO has released the first official trailer for its upcoming six-part limited series The Plot Against America.
Based on Philip Roth’s popular 2004 novel of the same name, the show was co-written by the creator of The Wire David Simon and follows a working-class Jewish family in an alternate version of 1940s America.
Aviator Charles Lindebergh (Ben Cole) wins the Presidential Election against Franklin D. Roosevelt and his xenophobic views leads to an unfortunate rise in anti-Semitism and facisim across the country.
Morgan Spector stars as the head of the family Herman Levin, an insurance salesman who we see desperately attempting to maintain a sense of normalcy as his life crumbles.
There’s a lot of hate out there,” he says. “And he (Lindebergh) knows how to tap into it.”
Zoe Kazan is his wife Bess while Winona Ryder and John Turturro play her sister Evelyn and brother-in-law Rabbi Lionel Bengelsdorf (John Turturro) who vocally support Lindergh’s presidency.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in December 2019, Simon revealed that HBO had previously approached him about adapting the series but he declined not feeling that the story was relevant.
The recent shift in Western politics soon changed his mind however.
“With what's happened politically in the last few years — not only in America, but throughout the West — in terms of this dissonance, almost fact-based political realities and demagoguery in the rise of the angry nationalists and populists, the very guts of what Roth was writing about suddenly seemed conceivable."
The Plot Against America will premiere on March 16th in the US but a UK release date has not yet been confirmed.
