HBO orders Batman spinoff Gotham PD
The show will take place before the events of the film and allow for a more in-depth exploration of its world.
US-only streaming service HBO Max has ordered a The Batman spinoff series centered around Gotham City police force.
Titled Gotham PD, the show will be set within the universe of Matt Reeves’s upcoming film which stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader.
A major theme of the show will reportedly be the exploration of the wide-scale corruption within the Gotham City police force, a subject that will be touched upon in the film.
It’s not yet clear whether, if any, characters from the film will be in the series. Although it’s unlikely that Pattinson’s Batman would make an appearance, it’s possible that Commissioner Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) could feature.
Boardwalk Empire creator Terrance Winter, who’s also known for his award-winning work on The Sopranos, will write the script. The search for a cast is expected to begin later this year.
“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a long-form format can afford,” said Reeves.
“Getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.”
The Batman is due to hit cinemas in 2021 and will apparently be set in the 1990s with more of a focus on the Dark Knight’s detective skills. Three villains, Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), The Riddler (Paul Dano) and The Penguin (Colin Farrell), are set to appear.
