Idris Elba teases possible Luther film
There isn't currently a plan to make another series, but a film could officially be in the works soon.
Idris Elba has teased the possibility of a future Luther film.
During a recent virtual Q&A for the upcoming third season of his semi-autobiographical comedy In The Long Run, the actor was asked about what’s next for his troubled detective.
"There isn't a real formal plan for Luther at the moment," he said.
"I've made it very clear that I'd like to see Luther come back as a film,” he added. “And I can tell you this, that we are this close to making a film of Luther."
Although nothing has ever been confirmed, talk of a potential Luther film has been circulating for a while. Creator Neil Cross spoke of his desire to create a prequel focusing on the detective’s early career as far back as 2013.
Elba also previously told the Metro in 2018 that Cross “was beavering away” on a script.
"Luther has all the ingredients to echo those classic films of the '90s like Seven and Along Came A Spider and I think what we'd like to attempt is to use that as a blueprint to create it,” he continued.
“It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther. Essentially we just want to try and take it to a much bigger remit and scale and perhaps international as well."
Luther follows the titular detective (Elba) as he attempts to solve a series of gruesome crimes and becomes entangled in a complex relationship with the psychopathic Alice (Ruth Wilson).
You can stream all five seasons of Luther on BBC iPlayer now.
