Irvine Welsh’s Crime to be adapted for TV

Irvine Welsh is adapting his 2008 novel Crime into a new TV series.

This will be the first time one of the novelist's works has been adapted for television, with Trainspotting and Filth being made into movies.

Crime acts as a sequel to Filth and follows a drug-using, alcoholic detective named Ray Lennox who moves to Miami and uncovers a conspiracy.

Welsh announced the adaption on Sunday at Mipcom in Cannes, and said that despite the troubling subject matter of the book, the story was ultimately uplifting.

“The story is one of a classic journey from darkness into light, and despite the troubling subject matter, I think an uplifting one.”

Casting for the show has already begun, with Scottish actor Dougray Scott, who has previously starred in Mission Impossible and Taken, signed on to play the main character.

Welsh's long-time screenwriting partner Dean Cavanagh will assist in writing the scripts for Crime, with co-creator of drama series Marcella Nicola Larder acting as executive producer.

The series is due to be largely filmed in Florida, with some flashback sequences taking place in Edinburgh.

Tony Wood, one of the producers on the show, said that Welsh's first TV outing was highly anticipated.

“Welsh is a true literary buccaneer whose work defines our generation. It's thrilling to be bringing talent of this calibre to television drama.”

Whilst it's not yet known when or where Crime will air, it is planned to be 6 one-hour episodes which Welsh is currently writing.
