ITV's psychological thriller series Liar will be returning for a second six-episode season, the broadcaster has confirmed.

Although an official air date has yet to be announced, with Liar's first season finishing just this week it's expected to be at least a year away.

Creators Harry and Jack Williams have stated it will serve as a direct continuation of the first season's nail-bitingly tense drama, acting to exploring the continuing fallout of schoolteacher Laura's (Joanne Froggat) rape at the hands of slimy doctor Andrew (Ioan Gruffudd).

Fans are also hoping to they'll receive a quick resolution to the shock cliff-hanger which saw Gruffudd's character lying dead in a watery ditch.

An official casting announcement from ITV has stated that both Froggat and Gruffudd are set to reprise their roles and, although its yet to be confirmed, it's expected that the majority of the secondary cast like DI Vanessa Harmon (Shelley Conn) and Laura's ex-boyfriend Tom Bailey (Luther's Warren Brown) will be back.

Liar has gripped the nation over the last six weeks and we're delighted both Joanne and Ioan will return to play Laura and Andrew,” said ITV's head of drama, Polly Hill.

“Jack and Harry Williams are incredible storytellers and part two of Liar will have the audience equally gripped, as we find out who killed Andrew Earlham.

Liar received mostly positive reviews from critics who compared it to ITV's smash-hit crime-drama Broadchurch starring Oliva Colman and David Tennant due its engaging whodunit storyline, complex characters and brilliantly tense atmosphere.
