Jessica Jones' second season to have all female directors

The Netflix and Marvel show is continuing the push for diversity.

Every episode of the upcoming second season of Marvel and Netflix's Jessica Jones will be helmed by a female director, announced executive producer Melissa Rosenberg.

The show's first season was highly praised as being an excellent feminist alternative to Marvel's so far mostly male-dominated cinematic and TV universe, with Captain America spin-off Agent Carter starring Hayley Atwell as the titular British S.H.I.E.L.D agent as the only other exception, as well as for its honest, authentic portrayal of sensitive subjects like sexual assault and PTSD.

Although it was Rosenberg who originally suggested they increase the number of female directors working on Jessica Jones, it was somebody much higher up in Marvel (in an interview with Variety, Rosenberg stated she was unable to reveal exactly who) who proposed they hire only women.

“We won't see a big increase in Hollywood industry diversity until those at the top start becoming active about their inclusivity” said Rosenberg, “it's important to hire people that can contribute something new and valuable. I don't want to work with a bunch of people who look and sound like me and have the experiences I have”.

Marvel's ever-increasing push for diversity received a considerable boost with last month's Netflix premiere of Luke Cage, marking the first time a black superhero was the central focus of a Marvel film or TV outing, and the announcement that came earlier this year that the comic book giant is moving forward with its first female lead superhero film Captain Marvel, starring academy award-winner Brie Larson.
