Jodie Whittaker announced as Doctor Who

The actress will be the first woman to play the Time-Lord.

Jodie Whittaker has been announced as the next star of long-running BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who

The BBC revealed the casting after Sunday night's Wimbledon final, in a short vignette that sees the new Doctor roaming a forest in search for the TARDIS - the inter-dimensional time-machine that the character uses in the series.

Whittaker will be the first woman to portray the character in its 52-year history, with 13 other actors previously being cast.

In the show, the Doctor is able to change his appearance when he is dying as part of his repertoire of alien powers - known as ‘regeneration'.

Whittaker is best-known for her turn in popular crime series Broadchurch, where she featured alongside previous Doctor David Tennant.

Chris Chibnall, writer of Broadchurch, is taking over showrunner duties for the 11th season of Doctor Who in 2018, so has previous experience working with the actress.

As well as Broadchurch, Whittaker has a sci-fi pedigree that includes 2011 council estate vs aliens film Attack the Block as well as the Black Mirror episode The Entire History of You

In an interview, the actress said taking on the iconic role was nerve-wracking but exciting.

“To be asked to play the ultimate character, to get to play pretend in the truest form: this is why I wanted to be an actor in the first place. To be able to play someone who is literally reinvented on screen, with all the freedoms that brings: what an unbelievable opportunity. And added to that, to be the first woman in that role.

“It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you're told you can and can't be. It feels incredible.”

The 11th season of Doctor Who will air on BBC 1 in 2018. You can catch up with the first 8 seasons on Netflix right now.
