Joe Exotic limited series in development

Saturday Night Live's Kate McKinnon will play his longtime rival Carol Baskins.

A new limited series exploring the story of larger-than-life zoo owner Joe Exotic is in development.

Exotic is also the focus of Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin’s acclaimed Netflix’s documentary Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness which is currently the platform’s most popular series in the UK.

That seven-part documentary series follows the eccentric Exotic (real name Joe Maldonado-Passage) as he runs his private Oklahoma zoo, the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park.

He soon develops an intense and vicious rivalry with Big Cat Rescue sanctuary owner Carol Baskins which very quickly escalates.

This still untitled limited series would instead centre around Baskins as she accuses Exotic of animal cruelty and attempts to get his controversial zoo permanently shut down.

It’s been confirmed that Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon will star as Baskins but the search for an actor to play Exotic is still underway.

This hasn’t stopped fan casting on Twitter with comedian and writer Stephen Merchant responding to suggestions that he should play Baskin’s husband Howard with “I’m in.”

Exotic is still in development at UPC and has not yet been bought by any TV network or streaming service. It’s also not currently clear who will write and direct the series.

You can stream Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness on Netflix now.
