League of Gentlemen and Alan Partridge to return to BBC

Some of the channel's biggest comedy hits are set to return.

Comedy series The League of Gentlemen and Alan Partridge are set to return to the BBC with new episodes.

A new series of the comedy show had been rumoured for a while, with the creators Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson now set to receive the black comedy show for 3 new episodes.

The announcement was made at the recent Edinburgh Festival, which hosts comedic talent from around the world.

Dyson, who confirmed that he was writing new sketches with Gatiss and Shearsmith, said that they started the process without a plan for how it would work.

“We were sceptical that it would actually happen. Even as we were meeting and writing it we kept saying, ‘But it's not really going to happen.' But it seems it is. It's come together very quickly, with the BBC committing to doing it, so it's been quite an intense period working on it from late Spring until now.”

He added: “When we started out we didn't know exactly what we were going to do, it was all quite exploratory as we sat down and did it. At first we were reluctant about committing to do more than an hour, but then we found that we had loads of stuff, and we ended up writing more than we'll use.”

As well as The League of Gentlemen, BBC 2 controller Patrick Holland also confirmed that Steve Coogan's Alan Partridge would also return to the channel.

The original Alan Partridge series aired on the BBC in the 1990s, with Coogan taking the character to Sky with Alan Partridge's Mid Morning Matters.

Whilst it's not yet known what form a new series would take, the announcement means that the character will now appear on where it originally began.

You can watch all of League of Gentlemen and Alan Partridge on Netflix right now.
