Louis Theroux announces new documentary series

Altered States will air on BBC2 sometime later this year.

Award-winning documentarian Louis Theroux will be returning to BBC2 later this year for a new three-part series.

Altered States will see him exploring a number of controversial issues facing the US today in his usual charmingly awkward, respectful manner.

The first entitled Take My Baby will focus on the multi-million dollar industry of baby-selling where adoptive parents will pay up to $50,000 for a newborn.

Maximum Love will see him head to the city of Portland, Oregon to take a look at polyamory or the practice of engaging in several relationships at once.

The third and final episode Choosing Death will examine the practice of euthanasia in California, one of six US states where the terminally ill can legally choose to end their lives.

No official release has been set, but the BBC have confirmed that it’ll definitely air in 2018.

“All of these stories have something a touch utopian about them, involving a kind of idealism and forward thinking that brings new opportunities but also new risks,” said Theroux in a press release.

"I have been given extraordinary levels of access to courageous people and families across the United States, many of them enduring unbelievable levels of stress and anguish, and it was a privilege to be allowed into their lives in this most personal way."

A number of Theroux’s documentaries, including his original Weird Weekends series, When Louis Met… and other BBC2 specials, are available to stream on Netflix now.
