Luther series 5 air date and trailer released

Luther is back in the new year.

The air date for the 5th season of Luther has been announced alongside a new trailer.

The 4 new episodes that comprise series 5will be broadcast across 4 nights starting on New Year’s Day.

Whilst details about series 5 have previously been scarce, the BBC has now released a plot synopsis offering a clue about what case Luther will be taking on.

“When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther must once again confront the depths of human depravity. As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror. But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect… and who to sacrifice.

“Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him - and will change John Luther forever.”

Alongside this, a new trailer has been released, suggesting some pretty dramatic goings-on soundtracked by the now obligatory acoustic version of a pop song.

Luther stars Idris Elba as a hard-boiled detective who solves dark crimes across modern London.

Due to how busy Elba is as an actor, episodes of the show are few and far in-between.

Rumours of a Luther movie have been around for a long time now, though series creator Neil Cross has never confirmed it.

You can catch up with all of Luther via BBC iPlayer and Netflix now.
