Luther series 5 confirmed by creator

The grizzled detective will hit the BBC once more.

Luther will get a 5th series, creator Neil Cross has announced.

The crime thriller series, starring Idris Elba, will return to screens at some point in the future, with Cross confirming that he has agreed a deal with the BBC.

Luther stars Idris Elba as a troubled detective who fights against a cavalcade of Batman-style villains.

The gritty series has been a hit with fans ever since it first started in 2010, with recent series having a reduced number of episodes thanks to budgetary restrictions and Elba being increasingly in-demand.

Cross said in an interview that there was still unfinished business for the detective.

"Now what? It's a question Idris and I get asked a lot...It can't be over, can it? There's so much we don't know. So much unfinished business. The thing is, we've been asking ourselves the same question.

"In the end, we picked up the phone to some old friends and asked if they'd like to find out what happens next. It turns out, they would. So that's what we're going to do. We're going to find out what happens next."

Idris Elba also commented, saying he was looking forward to playing the character again.

"Neil, the BBC and I have been talking about a further season and I am thrilled that we have been able to bring it all together. I look forward to putting the coat back on."

The new series of Luther will join the BBC's increasingly good drama lineup, which recently saw police corruption drama Line of Duty get record viewers and big name actors join series like The Night Manager and Taboo.

Filming for series 5 of Luther is scheduled to begin early next year, with the show expected to air in the summer of 2018.

You can catch the first 3 series of Luther on Netflix right now.
