Maniac won’t get a second season

Maniac appears to be a one series deal.

Netflix’s Maniac won’t return for a second season, its creator has said.

In an interview with Variety, Cary Fukunaga and Patrick Somerville said that the show was always imagined as a standalone mini-series.

"No. This was always planned as a limited series, and I think that's another reason why we had the freedom to have a more hopeful ending. A lot of times on TV, you have to throw your characters into distress again near the end to buy the next season, and we don't have to do that.

"It is a tremendous amount of energy and imagination to just to make a new show, and so you do have this feeling of wanting to hold on and keep using it, because there's so much imagination in there, but I think part of why Maniac had that improvisational feeling along the way was knowing that this is it. Let's do it now, because this is what Maniac is."

Maniac is the latest high-profile Netflix Original and stars Jonah Hill and Emma Stone as two strangers who undergo a bizarre pharmaceutical trial.

The series is based on a Norwegian show of the same name, though it’s different in a number of ways.

Cary Fukunaga has recently been confirmed to take over directing duties on the next James Bond film after Danny Boyle dropped out.

The director is also well-known for helming the first season of True Detective, to critical acclaim.

You can stream all of Maniac on Netflix right now.
