Any new series would likely follow more than one character, Steve Levitan and Chris Lloyd have said.

The creators of popular US sitcom Modern Family have opened up about creating a potential spinoff series.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Steve Levitan and Chris Lloyd said that while nothing solid had been agreed upon there are few ideas floating around the writer’s room.

“There has been a little bit of talk among a couple of our writers that maybe there is an idea in there  for something, but nothing solid has happened on that,” said Levitan.

Lloyd made it clear these ideas are all in the very early stages of planning with no specific plot details available but agreed they would have to find a way to give any spinoff its own feel.

“It's something that were we to do it, it can't just be more Modern Family; it's got to be some of our show but with new characters mixed in, perhaps.”

Something that Lloyd seemed fairly certain of was that any future spinoff wouldn’t just follow one character.

“It wouldn't be one character, but it might be a couple and we'll see where that goes.”

If that is the direction Levitan and Lloyd choose to go in, there’s definitely no shortage of characters to follow.

The recent series finale, which saw the show come to an end after ten years on the air, saw all of the characters moving onto the next stage in their lives, moving out of the family home, going to a new country and heading to university.

UK fans can catch the series finale of Modern Family on 15th April at 8:30pm on Sky Atlantic
