National Lampoon's Vacation TV series in the works

The sitcom would follow The Griswold family back in Chicago.

A TV series based on the classic comedy film National Lampoon’s Vacation is in development.

Titled The Griswolds, it would follow the titular family after they’ve returned from their chaotic road trip and are living in the suburbs of modern-day Chicago.

Big Bang Theory alum Johnny Galecki, who starred in the third sequel National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, is onboard as an executive producer while Scrubs’s Tim Hobart will write the script.

As to be expected from a project in such early stages, a full cast or official release date have yet to be announced.

The series will be shown on HBO Max, an upcoming US-only streaming service that will feature of mix of the broadcaster’s new and old programming.

Alongside it’s incredibly impressive back catalogue, which boasts acclaimed shows like Game of Thrones, the service will also feature a reboot of Gossip Girl and original drama The Flight Attendant with Kaley Cuoco.

The original National Lampoon’s Vacation was released back in 1983 and starred Chevy Chase as the head of a family who take a disastrous cross-country trip to the Walley World theme park in California.

Earning more than $60 million in the US alone, it was successful enough to spawn four sequels the last of which was released in 2015 starring Ed Helms and Christina Applegate.
