Netflix announces The Witcher TV series

The popular fantasy series is headed to Netflix.

Netflix has announced that it will produce a new show based on The Witcher series of novels and video games.

The Witcher is a fantasy series created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski that focuses on Witchers: warriors who are bred from a young age to hunt monsters that plague the land.

Despite originally being a series of novels, the property is arguably most famous for its video game incarnations, the third of which released in 2015 to rave reviews.

The protagonist of both the books and the games is Geralt, a world-weary Witcher who reluctantly helps turn the tide of a war in amongst hunting monsters for money.

Whilst it's not yet known which direction the series will take, original creator Andrzej Sapkowski said he was excited by the prospect of the series.

“I'm thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing.”

Sapkowski is acting as a creative consultant on the project, with Tomas Baginski - who directed introductory videos for all 3 games - confirmed to direct at least one episode.

Executive producers of the show, Sean Daniel and Jason Brown, added that Netflix gave them the freedom to make a faithful adaptation.

The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world.

“The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can't wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”

Fans of the series are already speculating who could play the titular Witcher, with Viggo Mortensen, Hugh Jackman and Mads Mikkelsen emerging as popular choices.
