Netflix considers cinema releases for Original films

Netflix Originals could be hitting a cinema near you.

Netflix may begin airing its Original films in cinemas, the streaming platform has said.

The streaming giant has recently ramped up its output of Original content, including both TV shows and films.

Now it is looking to screen its films in cinemas before they hit Netflix in a bid to have them considered for industry awards like the Oscars and Golden Globes.

A number of industry influencers such as Steven Spielberg have claimed that Netflix Original films should not be considered during awards season because they’re not shown in cinemas.

Netflix has two types of Original film - ones where they’ve paid for the production themselves and ones that they’re purchased from film studios.

Alfonso Cuaron’s new film Roma is being considered for theatrical release in order for it to be considered for the Oscars.

Last year’s Mudbound was granted a limited theatrical release which saw it nominated for 4 Oscars, meaning it’s a potentially winning idea for the streaming service.

Alex Garland’s Annihilation was a Netflix exclusive film outside of the US, which proved controversial for those wanting to see it in the cinema.

Annihilation was made for a theatrical release but the studio was concerned that it would fail at the box office, so sold it to Netflix to stream in Europe and the rest of the world.

If Netflix begins screening its films in cinemas, it will act similarly to Sky’s model with its original productions, where they hit cinemas and Sky Cinema on the same day.
