Netflix expands European budget

The service will feature more foreign-language programming.

Netflix has increased its budget for European shows to $1 billion, reports claim.

According to the Financial Times, the streaming service is set to up its costs for British and other European programming, with up to 10 new original shows and films commissioned.

The report claims that these programmes will include 7 shows, 2 documentaries and a film.

Yesterday, it was reported that Netflix had increased its subscriber base to 125 million users worldwide, something that has been attributed to its expansion into international markets.

Local-language content is set to form a big part of Netflix's European output, with these types of shows proving popular on the platform already.

European Netflix Originals such as Money Heist, Dark and Suburra: Blood on Rome have been highly rated, with Dark especially popular with subscribers.

Dark is set to get another season soon, with shooting scheduled to begin on June 25th.

Whilst there's no word yet as to what the upcoming Originals will entail, it's fair to say that anything that appears will have the standard high production values of Netflix's other series.

With the new focus on European programming, it's assumed that the service will produce some UK originals, something that it is currently lacking compared to US series.

Netflix is set for another big year, with new seasons of GLOW, House of Cards, Luke Cage and Daredevil set to hit the platform.

New original films are also due to release this year, including Extinction, Sahara and Outlaw King.
