Netflix orders first original Belgian series

All six episodes of Into The Night will arrive on Netflix in 2020.

Netflix has commissioned its first original Belgian TV series as it continues its investment into new European content.

Created by former Narcos and Scandal producer Jason George, Into The Night has been described as a “high concept thriller”.

George wrote all six episodes and will serve as the main showrunner for the series with Belgian director Inti Calfat at the helm.

Into The Night was inspired by Jacek Dukaj’s digital-only novel The Old Axolotl which was released online back in 2015.

It begins with sudden solar event which sees the light from the sun’s rays inexplicably start to kill everything they touch.

The passengers and crew of a night flight out of Brussels are forced to work together to stay alive and keep the plane flying west into the safety of darkness.

An official cast has yet to be announced but will consist of international actors from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia and Turkey.

“What I loved most in this story was the inevitability of apocalypse and the idea that you can run from it in a plane with a group of strangers who don’t even speak the same language,” said executive producer Tomek BagiƄski.

“We never really know people we travel with – to realize that maybe those people are now your tribe – people your survival depends on – this is a base for a great drama."
