Netflix rolls out downloads for select programmes

Netflix has begun to rollout a new download feature which will allow users to watch shows offline.

Offline viewing has been one of the most requested features of the service for a while, with rival streaming services such as Amazon Prime and pay-TV services like Sky offering downloads.

Whilst Netflix is rolling this feature out worldwide, only a selection of its programmes will be on offer.

This includes a number of its original shows, such as Orange is the New Black, Narcos and the recent The Crown. Netflix has said that more are planned to be made available for download.

Offline viewing will be made available to all customers at no extra cost, with the service currently compatible with Android and iOS devices.

Director of Product Innovation at Netflix, Eddy Wu, said that the feature would be great for users watching Netflix whilst travelling.

“While many members enjoy watching Netflix at home, we've often heard they also want to continue their Stranger Things binge while on airplanes and other places where internet is expensive or limited.”

It's currently uncertain whether Netflix will allow films to be downloaded, but it is expected to allow non-original shows to be watched offline at some stage.

Netflix has made its name with its library of films and TV programmes, but has recently moved its focus to its Netflix Original series.

These are a mixture of shows Netflix has commissioned itself and properties it has bought exclusive rights to.

Series such as Stranger Things, House of Cards and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt have proved to be huge critical hits, pushing Netflix's programming budget up to $6 billion.
