Netflix to axe user reviews

Netflix reviews will be removed at the end of July.

Netflix has announced plans to scrap user reviews from its website.

The streaming service has said that it will eliminate the feature from July 30th in all of its territories.

A spokesperson for the service said that reviews were becoming increasingly rare from users, hence the reason for dropping them altogether.

On Netflix's desktop site, users can leave a review (80 characters or shorter) alongside a star rating between 1 and 5.

If you only watch Netflix through a smart TV or tablet, you might not have even realised this was a feature, as it’s available on the desktop site only.

Users previously were able to leave a 1-5 star rating on other platforms, but this was replaced by a thumbs up or down feature a few years ago.

The reason for the change was that most Netflix users either like something or not, rather than having a complex opinion about a watched show or film.

Netflix also uses the thumbs system in order to recommend different content users, so they’ll (in theory) see more of what they like.

Netflix VP of product innovation, Todd Yellin, said that star ratings have become a thing of the past.

"Five stars feels very yesterday now. It really projects what you think you want to tell the world.

"We want to move to a system where it's really clear, when members rate, that it's for them, and to keep on making the Netflix experience better and better."

As well as removing the ability to submit reviews, Netflix will also remove existing reviews on the site to keep a cohesion between desktop and app interfaces.

Netflix is the most recent video providers to axe star ratings, with YouTube changing their system to thumbs up or down years ago.
