Netflix wins rights to new thriller Leave the World Behind
Due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions, it's not clear when the film will start production.
Netflix has secured the global rights to new thriller Leave the World Behind starring Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts.
The film is an adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s upcoming novel of the same name which is due to be published this October.
The streamer’s acquisition comes after a fierce bidding war which reportedly came down to just them, Apple and MGM.
Mr Robot creator Sam Esmail will both write and direct the film which sees Roberts play one half of a married couple who rent a remote holiday home with their two teenage children.
Soon however, the home’s original owner (Washington) and his wife unexpectedly return citing a major blackout in the city.
Strange events, including a sonic boom and all of their technology ceasing to function, begin to occur leading to erratic behaviour and rising tensions between the two families.
Leave the World Behind will be the second time Washington and Roberts have starred in a film together after hit legal thriller The Pelican Brief in 1993.
A release date for the film is not yet known.
