Dark Crystal TV series gets release date

All ten episodes will hit Netflix on 30th August.

Netflix has set a release date for its Dark Crystal prequel TV series.

All ten episodes of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will drop at midnight on 30th August.

Set many years before the events of Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s 1982 cult classic, it too will follow three elf-like characters known as Gelflings (voiced by Taron Egerton, Anna Taylor-Joy and Nathalie Emmanuel) who set out to save their planet Thra from the evil race of Skeksis.

Now You See Me director Louis Leterrier helmed all ten episodes and the rest of the star-studded voice cast includes Mark Hamill, Simon Pegg, Helena Bonham Carter, Alicia Vikander and Natalie Dormer.

The idea for a film sequel to the Dark Crystal was first floated around in 2006 but was ultimately cancelled in 2010 after experiencing several delays, a change of director and budgetary concerns.

Production began on the series in 2017 and has lasted so long due to Leterrier’s desire to use puppets rather than CGI to depict the film’s characters in the style of the original.

“I was not fighting against anyone, I was fighting against common sense and practicality,” said Leterrier. “It’s so so complicated to build a puppet, hire puppeteers, all that stuff. We chose the longest, hardest road and we’re very thankful [we did]. It looks absolutely stunning.”
