New details revealed about Disney+'s Cassian Andor series
The streamer's second original Star Wars series will fall into the spy thriller genre.
Disney+’s untitled Cassian Andor series will reportedly have the feel of a spy thriller, according to a new plot synopsis.
Reported by TV and film news site The Illuminerdi it will follow:
“The adventures of Rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Diego Luna will reprise the role of Andor, which he originated in the 2016 film.”
“The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire."
While this doesn’t give away any specific plot details, exploring the spy thriller could see the upcoming series adopt a slightly more mature tone and of course offers plenty of opportunities for gripping, action-packed storylines.
The Mandalorian, Disney+’s other critically-acclaimed Star Wars series, also strayed away from its normal sci-fi/fantasy genre feeling firmly like spaghetti western.
Considering The Rise of Skywalker’s lacklustre reception amongst fans and critics, taking these series in different directions to the rest of the franchise is definitely a good idea and helps to keep the universe feeling fresh and exciting.
The setting is no surprise given Andor’s demise at the end of the 2016 prequel Rogue One as he and fellow resistance fighter Jynn Erso (Felicity Jones) were blown up attempting to get the death star plans to Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher).
Andor was supposed to begin filming this June but it was announced in February that the date had been removed from the calendar to give its creative team time to rework the script.
A specific release date for Cassian Andor has yet to be confirmed but it’s expected to hit Disney+ sometime next year.
