New Judge Dredd TV series greenlit
Dredd is heading to the small screen.
A new series based on the British comic book Judge Dredd is being produced.
The producers of the 2012 film based on the property, Dredd, have announced that they are working on a live-action TV show called Judge Dredd: Mega City One.
Chris and Jason Kingsley are working with Mark Stern - who developed the rebooted Battlestar Galactica series along with independant production company IM Global.
The series is still in its very early stages, with scripts still not developed and the cast still not formalised.
The show has been described as “high-end”, with the producers saying it will have a high enough budget to do the property justice.
Judge Dredd follows a lawman in a dystopian US East Coast, where millions of people live in ‘Mega Cities' where crime is rampant.
The 2012 film has become a cult hit since its release, with many fans clamouring for a sequel or spin-off series.
Whilst there's no new to suggest whether Karl Urban (who played Dredd in the film) will star, the actor did retweet the announcement on Twitter, prompting some fans to speculate that he will appear.
Mark Stern said in an interview that the comic book series had huge potential for a TV show.
"This is one of those seminal sci-fi properties that seems to only become and more relevant with age. Not only is it a rich world with biting social commentary, but it's also fun as hell!
"As a fan of the comics and both films, it's a dream come true to be able to work with Jason and Chris in adapting this for television."
