Oscar winner in True Detective talks

The Moonlight actor could be on-board for True Detective.

HBO is in talks to bring in actor Mahershala Ali for a third season of True Detective.

Variety reported that the premium cable channel is in talks with the Oscar-winning actor for a potential new season, despite the fact that it has not yet been officially announced.

Earlier this year, it was reported that a new season of the crime anthology series was “in the works”, but HBO has been tight-lipped since then.

Each season of True Detective follows a new story, with the original seeing Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson team up to solve a cult crime in swampy Louisiana.

The second season starred Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams and was panned by critics despite having some interesting moments.

Deadwood creator David Milch has since been brought in to help True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto shape the next season, which is reportedly in the script stages.

Mahershala Ali has risen to fame in recent years thanks to an Oscar-winning performance in the critically cherished film Moonlight and an intense turn in Netflix's Luke Cage

Whilst it's not yet known what role the actor would theoretically be playing, it's safe to assume he'd be a major player in any new season.

Original series star Matthew McConaughey has expressed interest in returning to the role of the mysterious Rust Cohle, but admitted that he had not yet been asked.

"If that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn't hesitate for a second. Oh, I'm open to it for sure.”

You can watch the second season of True Detective on NOW TV right now.
