Patrick Stewart confirms Star Trek return

Jean-Luc Picard is returning to Star Trek with his own series.

Sir Patrick Stewart has confirmed his return to Star Trek, 16 years after he left the franchise.

The legendary British actor will return to the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard for the first time since 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis.

Stewart will star in a new series which will air on CBS All Access in the US and will focus on the next chapter of the captain’s life.

Jean-Luc Picard is one of the most beloved characters in the pantheon of Star Trek, even eclipsing William Shatner’s Captain Kirk.

The announcement was initially made during the Star Trek Las Vegas convention, with Stewart making a surprise appearance on stage with series producer Alex Kurtzman.

The actor remarked how he’d been touched with the amount of love his character gets, with many viewers inspired by Picard.

“During these past years, it has been humbling to hear stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership.

“I feel I’m ready to return to what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavour to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.”

CBS All Access has a number of Star Trek shows in development, including shorts and a new season of Star Trek Discovery, which will return in January 2019.

You can watch all of Star Trek: The Next Generation as well as all the other Star Trek series on Netflix right now.
