Peep Show set for gender swap US remake

There have already been three attempts to develop the series in 2005, 2008 and 2016 respectively.

BAFTA award-winning sitcom Peep Show is to receive a US remake with two female actors in the lead roles.

Series co-creator Sam Bain announced the news in a recent Guardian online article about diversity in comedy.

“People sometimes ask if I look at my earlier work differently now – whether my shows would have been better if they had been more diverse.” he wrote.

”What would Peep Show have been like with women as the two leads? It’s a great question – and it’s one I’ll shortly have the answer to, because there is a script in development for a US Peep Show with two female leads.”

Karey Dornetto, who previously worked as an executive producer on Community and hipster spoof Portlandia, will write the series which is being developed for FX Networks.

A cast or release date has yet to be announced.

Peep Show ran for nine seasons on Channel 4 between 2003 and 2015 following the lives of mismatched flatmates uptight loan manager Mark (David Mitchell) and unemployed musician Jeremy (Robert Webb).

It’s still the broadcasters longest-running comedy series and also starred Academy-Award winner Olivia Colman as Mark's love interest Sophie.

There have already been several attempts to launch a US remake of Peep Show. Fox created a pilot starring Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki back in 2005 that never went to series while Spike TV and Starz both tried and failed to launch one in 2008 and 2016 respectively.
