Robert Pattinson joins the cast of Netflix's The King

The former Twilight actor will star as a French prince in Netflix's upcoming original film.

Robert Pattinson is the latest famous face to join the cast of Netflix's upcoming original film The King

Set to be directed by David Michôd, who also helmed 2017's satirical thriller War Machine, The King will be a historical drama partly inspired by Shakespeare's Henry VI and Henry V plays.

Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet will star as the young prince Henry in the late 1300s as he's unexpectedly thrust onto the English throne after his brother dies in battle.

The film will explore the turbulent early days of his reign, when Britain was in a precarious state and verging on the start of the Hundred Years' war with France.

Pattinson is Henry's mistrustful rival French prince The Dauphin, while Rogue One's Ben Mendelsohn is his predecessor King Henry IV, Joel Edgerton is his close friend Falstaff, Lily-Rose Depp is the French Princess Catherine and Sean Harris is soldier William.

Although having originally shot to fame in vampire romance Twilight, Pattinson has since gone onto star in a number of celebrated indie films including the Safdie brothers' energetic thriller Good Time and Michod's own post-apocalyptic sci-fi The Rover

Filming for The King is scheduled to begin in the UK this week ahead of a 2019 release date.

Good Time is available on Netflix now.
