Sharp Objects to remain standalone

The series won't follow Big Little Lies.

HBO has announced that there will be no second season for Sharp Objects.

The mini-series starring Amy Adams is currently being broadcast on HBO and Sky Atlantic and today the network confirmed that it won’t get a second season.

Sharp Objects is based on the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name and follows Amy Adams’ character as she investigates a string of unsolved murders in her hometown whilst grappling with her disturbed childhood.

The series has been widely praised for its acting and directing, with it being helmed by Big Little Lies director Jean-Marc Vallee.

Unlike Big Little Lies, however, Sharp Objects won’t be seeing a second season, with HBO chief of programming Casey Bloys confirming it in a recent interview.

“I’ll tell you the difference. For Big Little Lies, Reese [Witherspoon], Nicole [Kidman], Laura [Dern], Shailene [Woodley], and Zoe [Kravitz] — they all wanted to do it again. As you know, the show is dark, and Amy’s character is very dark.”

“It’s a difficult role for an actress to play. I believe she doesn’t want to play that character again, which I completely understand. It’s a lot to take on, and without her I just don’t see it. I think this is one where you gotta say, ‘We got a fantastic limited series, and we’ll leave it at that.'”

Big Little Lies was also based off a novel, with the second season set to expand on the characters in the aftermath of the events of the first.

The series was produced by stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, allowing for a second season.

Sharp Objects is the latest adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s work, with both Dark Places and Gone Girl being made into films.

You can watch the first four episodes of Sharp Objects via NOW TV Entertainment and catch the remaining four on Sky Atlantic.
