Sky and HBO to team up for new drama projects

The pay-TV giants will collaberate on a new project.

Sky has announced that it will team up with US network HBO for new prestige dramas.

Sky and HBO have both worked together in recent years, with Sky Atlantic having exclusive broadcasting rights to HBO programming.

Now, the two companies will combine to create original drama, with the co-production taking the form of multiple drama series, with the first of which already starting production.

The deal reportedly involves a budget of $250 million spread over a number of years, with Sky and HBO aiming for “prestige” dramas.

The project will greenlight at least 2 dramas per year, with the first expected to be released at some point in 2018.

Chairman of HBO, Richard Plepler, said that the partnership meant that the networks could reach a new level of quality in drama.

"Sky has been a great partner for us and this deal allows even deeper collaboration between our two great companies, which have a long tradition in creating superior content for our customers. Together we represent the best in television and combined we will raise the bar even higher in pay-TV programming."

Group CEO of Sky, Jeremy Darroch, added that HBO and Sky had a common vision for TV development.

"HBO and Sky have for many years shared a common creative culture and a common vision for the development of high quality drama.  This new venture deepens that relationship, maintains our leadership position in world-class content, provides great opportunities for indies and gives our customers even more opportunity to enjoy brilliant storytelling."

You can watch HBO shows such as True Detective, Girls and Boardwalk Empire on Sky Box Sets and NOW TV right now.
