Sky Sports to replace numbered channels alongside price slash

Sky Sports will undergo radical changes.

Sky has announced plans to change the structure of its Sky Sports channels and packages.

The provider is scrapping its numbered channels in favour of channels that offer specific sports, with football, cricket and golf leading the pack.

Sky Sports Football will have 2 channels dedicated to it alongside Sky Sports Cricket and Sky Sports Golf. Sky Sports Arena will cover content such as rugby and tennis.

The dedicated Formula 1 channel, Sky Sports F1, will remain as part of the line-up, with the channel acting as the inspiration for this shift.

As part of the channel changes, Sky Sports will also being reducing the prices of its Sports packages, allowing customers to pick and choose which channels they want.

This differs from the current method, which forces customers to subscribe to every channel, regardless of interest.

It is thought that this change is a move to contend with on-demand streaming services, where customers pick and choose what type of content they want to watch.

Director at Ampere Analysis, Richard Broughton, said that the cheaper prices where to get younger people on-board.

“There are a range of reasons why Sky would be looking at such a big structural change to its pay-TV service,” said Richard Broughton, a director at Ampere Analysis.

“In part it could be a response to the ongoing question of viewing numbers to traditional pay-TV sport. There is also a demographic shift where people, especially younger groups, are reluctant to spend so much. Get reluctant to spend groups, such as millennials, in on cheap packages and look to up-sell at a later date.”

Sky recently paid £4.2 billion for the rights to broadcast Premier League football games - 83% higher than the previous cost.
