Sony and LG to drop 3D TV support

TV giants set to drop dead format.

Sony and LG have confirmed that they are dropping 3D support for their new lines of TVs.

3D TV was once tipped as the revolutionary way to watch television, with all the major manufacturers incorporating the technology into their devices.

The uptake of 3D has since been low, with Sony and LG continuing the wave of tech companies dropping the support after Samsung and Philips did the same last year.

3D TVs allow owners to watch 3D-supported content, such as 3D Blu-Rays or streaming content. Broadcasters rarely operate in 3D, making it a difficult proposition for many buyers.

Research also showed that the glasses required for 3D functionality also put consumers off buying.

LG's director of new product development, Tim Alessi, said in an interview that the company had no choice but to drop the feature since usage was so low.

“3D capability was never really universally embraced in the industry for home use, and it's just not a key buying factor when selecting a new TV.

"Purchase process research showed it's not a top buying consideration, and anecdotal information indicated that actual usage was not high.”

Both Sony and LG have claimed to be focusing more on HDR technology, which is related to 4K resolution and has proven to be much more popular.

Whilst smaller brands such as Sharp, Hisense and TCL have yet to formally drop 3D, the lack of 3D TV announcements at this year's Consumer Electronics Show is essentially a confirmation.
