Sopranos prequel film gets new title and release date

Tony and the gang will return in Autumn 2020.

The Sopranos prequel movie is set to hit screens in September 2020.

The TV event will act as a prequel to the legendary gangster drama, which starred James Gandolfini as the troubled mob boss Tony Soprano.

The movie was originally titled The Many Saints of Newark, but has since been renamed to simply ‘Newark’.

Gandolfini’s son, Michael, is set to play the part of Tony, with Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Corey Stoll and Billy Magnussen also cast in the film.

Details on the film are still minimal, though we know that it is being written by David Chase and directed by former Sopranos director Alan Taylor.

Creator of The Sopranos, David Chase, said in a recent interview that he was compelled to write the movie after thinking about the area its set.

"I was interested in Newark and life in Newark at that time. But the thing that interested me most was Tony’s boyhood. I was interested in exploring that."

Newark is just one of the film spin-offs that HBO has planned for some of its beloved series, with a Deadwood sequel film planned to release later this year.
