Spin-off series to The Shining in the works

Overlook will focus on other supernatural happenings at the haunted hotel.

The US-based streaming service HBO Max has announced its plans to develop a new series inspired by Stephen King’s classic horror novel The Shining

Titled Overlook, it will explore “the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction” according to a description issued by HBO’s parent company WarnerMedia.

“Iconic” characters will also apparently feature but it’s not yet clear who that’ll be.

King is officially attached to the project and will once again team up with J.J Abrams’s production studio Bad Robot and WarnerBros TV.

The trio previously collaborated on anthology series Castle Rock which sees different characters, themes and stories from King’s vast universe intersect in the titular Maine town.

The search is currently underway for directors but according to Deadline, Castle Rock’s co-creator Dustin Thomas and co-executive producer Scottt Brown are in negotiations to write the script.

Alongside Overlook, HBO Max also ordered a series adaptation of the DC comic Justice League Dark and Duster which will follow a getaway driver for a crime syndicate in the 1970s.

The Shining was famously adapted into a film in 1980 by legendary director Stanley Kubrick starring Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel who slowly loses his mind during the isolated winter.
