Star Trek: Discovery begins production with new trailer

Production on the sci-fi prequel series has just begun.

The first teaser trailer for the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery has been released alongside the start of production.

The sci-fi juggernaut will return to the small screen after a 12-year absence, with production on the show starting now.

Star Trek: Discovery is set a decade before the original 60s series and follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they explore the universe.

The teaser trailer gives a sneak peak of the filming, with footage from the set in Toronto, Canada.

The cast includes Walking Dead star Sonequa Martin-Green alongside Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp and James Frain.

Despite production starting on the show, CBS - where it will air - have not set a premiere date yet, claiming that “it's more important to do it right than do it fast”.

Star Trek: Discovery is set to be the first original show to be available via the CBS All Access platform, the network's own streaming service.

All the previous series of Star Trek are currently available via All Access, including The Next Generation, Enterprise and Deep Space Nine.

Whilst it's not yet known how the show will air in the UK, the fact that much of Star Trek is available on Netflix suggests that is where it might be heading.
