Star Trek Discovery casts Inhumans actor as Captain Pike
The actor will move from Marvel to Star Trek this year.
Star Trek Discovery has cast Anson Mount as classic character Captain Pike.
The star of the short-lived Marvel's Inhumans tweeted yesterday that he has joined the cast for the show's second season and will play the famous Captain Christopher Pike.
Pike is a character from the original series who was the original captain of the USS Enterprise in the pilot for Star Trek, with the character being dropped in favour of William Shatner's Captain Kirk.
Pike made a reappearance in the infamous episode 'The Menagerie', where he was disfigured and appeared in a wheelchair, only able to communicate with flashing lights.
This has become one of Star Trek's more iconic scenes, memorably being sent up in the brilliant Futurama episode ‘Where No Fan Has Gone Before'.
Anson Mount said that playing the character was a dream he has had since he was a kid.
"Cat's out of the bag. Yep, I have officially joined STARFLEET, a dream I've had since around the age of 8 when I first discovered TOS syndicated on my local access channel in middle TN. And couldn't be more excited to be playing PIKE!”
Star Trek Discovery has received acclaim from fans, despite being more in the mould of the new Star Trek films rather than the original series.
The first season of the show ended on a cliffhanger where the Discovery received a distress call from the USS Enterprise.
The series is set before the original, so it makes sense that it delves into the original Star Trek crew.
Star Trek Discovery is a Netflix Original in the UK, airing episode by episode at the same time as the US on CBS All Access.
You can catch the full first season on Netflix right now.
