The Expanse officially picked up by Amazon

Amazon will now host season 4 of the show.

Cancelled Sci-Fi series The Expanse has been officially acquired by Amazon.

The Amazon Prime streaming service will now be the host of the show's 4th season after it was cancelled by home network SyFy.

The announcement comes after fans started a petition urging streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon to save the show, with thousands of signings backing it up.

The Expanse was cancelled among a number of high-profile shows such as Brooklyn 99 (which has since been saved by NBC), Last Man on Earth and Lucifer.

There had been some speculation as to which service would pick up The Expanse, as Netflix already hosts the series outside of the US.

Amazon, however, owns the streaming rights in North America, making the decision a simple one for the retail and streaming giant.

In a statement, the co-CEOs of Alcon Entertainment (production company for The Expanse) said that they were thrilled that the series would now be able to continue.

“We couldn't be more excited that THE EXPANSE is going to continue on Amazon Prime! We are deeply grateful that Jeff Bezos, Jen Salke, and their team at Amazon have shown such faith in our show.  We also want to thank Laura Lancaster, head of Alcon Television for her tireless efforts.

“We are fully aware that this wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for the staggering outpouring of support from the most creative, hardest working sci-fi fans around the world. From Reddit campaigns to aeroplanes, we say thank you. It worked!”

The Expanse will be the latest in a number of new original and exclusive series on Amazon, including a series based on the Culture novels and the highly publicised Lord of the Rings prequel series.

You can currently watch the first 2 seasons of The Expanse on Netflix, though for how much longer remains to be seen.
