The Handmaid’s Tale renewed for season 3

It's been a big week for 3rd seasons of prestige drama.

The Handmaid's Tale has been officially renewed for a third season, Hulu has confirmed.

The confirmation comes just a few weeks into the airing of the second season, which has yet to appear in the UK.

The Handmaid's Tale is based on Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name, where a religious cult has taken the US by force and enslaves women in order to force them to breed.

The first season was widely loved by audiences and critics, despite its grim subject matter and dark tone.

Elizabeth Moss stars as the main character Offred (real name June), who has to escape her captors and look for her husband and daughter.

The series received a number of Emmys and is clearly successful for Hulu, so it makes sense that a new season is already in the works.

So far, season 2 has focused on June's attempted escape from the city of Gilead as well as the audience's first glimpse at the Colonies - the labour camps non-compliant women are sent to.

Due to the nature of the novel, the series is now having to build upon the original story, essentially acting as a sequel as well as adaptation.

Channel 4 airs The Handmaid's Tale in the UK, though it has yet to offer a specific air date, only saying that it will appear in Spring 2018.
