The Purge cancelled after two seasons

Declining viewership figures are to blame.

The Purge TV series has been cancelled after two seasons, USA Network has announced.

As well as being quite expensive to make, the show was repeatedly failing to draw in enough live viewers.

While ratings were strong following its premiere in September 2018 they fell by a significant 50% across the second season.

The show is based on James DeMarco's popular film franchise of the same which is centered around the idea of an annual Purge Night where all crime is legal for 12 hours.

It took the form of an anthology with the first season following several characters throughout Purge Night and the second exploring the lasting effects of such an event on others.

Gabriel Chavarria, Jessica Garza, Amanda Warren, Lee Tergesen, Derek Luke and Paola Núñez all star with Ethan Hawke reprising his role from the first film in the season 2 finale.

Thomas Kelly served as showrunner for both seasons while DeMarco produced and wrote the pilot episode.

You can stream both seasons of The Purge on Amazon Prime now.
