The Walking Dead renewed for season 9

The dead will be walking back onto screens in 2018.

The Walking Dead has been renewed for its 9th season, AMC has announced.

The network announced in a press release that the popular zombie apocalypse series would return for a 9th outing, but with a slight difference.

The 9th season will feature a new showrunner, with Scott Gimple moving on  to be Chief Content Officer for the Walking Dead franchise.

His replacement is Angela Kang, who has written for the show since 2011 and will now oversee all the scripts and storylines.

President of AMC, Charlie Collier, said that Kang was a good choice to move the series forward.

“This is an enormously important day for the entire ‘The Walking Dead' television universe. We are proud to acknowledge Angela's significant contribution to the series and to set a clear path forward for a ninth season under her direction.

“Together, we will dream bigger and more broadly than ever before. I know I speak for Angela, Scott and everyone at AMC when I say thanks most of all to the fans and the many talented people who have helped AMC play ‘Dead.'”

Scott Gimple's tenure over The Walking Dead has been controversial for a number of reasons, including killing off loved characters and making changes to the series ‘big bad' Negan.

Angela Kang said of her new role that she was looking forward to taking control over the adaptation of the comic book series.

“I am beyond thrilled to be stepping into this new role with ‘The Walking Dead.' Working on this series and having the opportunity to adapt Robert Kirkman's amazing comic has been a fangirl dream come true for me. I'm excited to continue working with Scott and the wonderfully supportive folks at AMC, and can't wait to share the next chapter of the story with our fans next fall.”

The Walking Dead remains largely popular with viewers despite its lower ratings for season 8, with the series showing no signs of coming to a conclusion any time soon.

You can watch seasons 1-6 of The Walking Dead on Amazon Prime Video right now.
