The X-Files season 11 gets first trailer

Take a first look at the latest X-Files.

The first trailer for the upcoming 11th season of The X-Files has emerged.

Fans were treated to new footage of the season, which sees FBI agents Mulder and Scully once again face off against the supernatural and extraterrestrial.

The season will continue the agents' search for their long-missing son William, who holds the key to the alien invasion mystery that has been ongoing throughout the show's history.

The location of William was a big plot point in the 10th season, which saw a tepid reception despite some decent episodes.

This time round, show creator Chris Carter has said that the ongoing mythology will be sidelined in favour of fan-favourite ‘Monster of the Week' episodes, with only 2 dealing with the overreaching arc.

Season 10 was marred in the eyes of many fans with its pursuit of the now extremely complicated mythology, so this news will be welcome to those who enjoyed the more memorable standalone episodes.

The trailer also reveals a number of familiar faces that are set to make a return in season 11, including Skinner, Monica Reyes and the ever-present Cigarette Smoking Man - the guy behind nearly all of the shady plots in the X-Files universe.

Whilst the release date for season 11 has not yet been revealed, the show is set to return at some point in 2018, with the first half of the year being a good bet.

The show will air on FOX in the US and Channel 5 in the UK, with the channel owning the rights to a number of FOX's properties.

If you haven't caught up with The X-Files yet, you can catch the entire 10 season run on Amazon Prime Video right now. That's a lot of catching up to do.
