Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott to produce Christmas Carol

The team is set to reunite for more chilly Victorian antics.

Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott has teamed up to produce an adaptation of A Christmas Carol for the BBC.

The actor is said to be working with the legendary British director (known for Alien and Gladiator) to create a new version of Charles Dickens' classic novel.

The duo will also team up once again with Stephen Knight, whom they both worked with on period drama Taboo

A Christmas Carol is one of the most adapted books ever, with a large number of versions made for film and TV, with actors ranging from Michael Caine to Bill Murray playing the role of miserly Ebenezer Scrooge.

The project is set to be part of a number of Dickens adaptations from the team, with A Christmas Carol due to air in 2019, presumably at Christmas.

Tom Hardy commented on the project, saying that Dickens' work is ideal to adapt.

A Christmas Carol is a fabulous magical piece of theatre and an embarrassment of riches for our creative team – from character all the way through to design. Here's to having a lot of intricate and wonderful fun. We feel very lucky.”

Stephen Knight has been involved with a number of successful British films and TV series, including Taboo, Peaky Blinders and films Eastern Promises and Locke (which also features Hardy).

Whilst there's no word yet on whether Hardy will play the starring role of Scrooge, it's fair to assume that will happen, with Hardy having previous experience of grouching around Victorian London in a big hat in Taboo.

The long wait for this version is also presumably due to Hardy's commitments to a number of film roles, including Venom and the announced follow-up to Mad Max: Fury Road. Taboo is also set to return next year.
