True Detective 3 officially in the works

New True Detective episodes are in production.

New episodes of True Detective are being worked on, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed.

Creator of the show Nick Pizzolatto is said to have written two scripts for what would be the third season of the anthology crime series.

Rumours of a third season have been around since the airing of the poorly-received second in 2015.

Now, it's been confirmed that the creator of Western drama Deadwood, David Milch, has joined the project to work on ideas for the series.

HBO has still not officially ordered a third season, but the addition of Milch means that it is at least being worked on.

Milch is not expected to take over the showrunning duties from Pizzolatto, but rather “help shape the creative vision for a new storyline”.

True Detective's second season came under fire from fans of the first when it aired in 2015 and followed Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams as they try to foil a crime ring in central California.

Since then fans have been speculating about the possibility of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey returning for the third season, but the anthology aspect of the show makes this unlikely.

McConaughey said in a recent interview that he would be up for doing it again, but had not yet been asked.

"If that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn't hesitate for a second. Oh, I'm open to it for sure.”

As well as True Detective, Pizzolatto is working on a rebooted version of the classic US detective show Perry Mason, which is due to star Robert Downey Jr.
