Walking Dead movie in development

Rick Grimes will return in up to 3 films.

A Walking Dead spinoff film has been announced by AMC.

The announcement follows the end of main actor Andrew Lincoln’s run in the series, with his final episode airing on Sunday night in the US.

The actor had previously said he was leaving the series to focus on other projects, but now it looks like those other projects will be The Walking Dead films.

Lincoln plays the character Rick Grimes, who is tasked with leading his friends and family through a zombie apocalypse.

The character saw his final episode on Sunday but did not die - unlike most characters on the show.

Former Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple will pen a script for a film featuring the continued adventures of Rick Grimes, with production set to start next year.

In a statement, the writer said that there would likely be more than one film starring Lincoln.

“We have a lot on the horizon – starting with a new epic featuring one of the greatest leading actors in television history and one of the best people I’ve ever met. These films are going to be big evolutions of what we’ve been doing on the show, with the scope and scale of features.

“We’re starting with the first part of the continuing story of Rick Grimes, and there is much more on the way, featuring yet-unseen worlds of The Walking Dead and faces from the show’s past, as well as new characters we hope to become favourites, told by TWD veterans and emerging voices. We want to break new ground with different, distinct stories, all part of the same world that’s captured our imagination for nearly a decade of the Dead.”

You can catch the new episodes of The Walking Dead along with the previous 8 seasons on NOW TV Entertainment.
