Westworld leads 2017 Emmy nominations

The sci-fi Westwern has cleaned house in the Emmy noms.

The nominations for the 2017 Emmy Awards have been announced, with HBO's Westworld leading the pack.

The Emmys are the prestige TV awards in the US, with the year's best shows and performances recognised by an Acadamy.

The nomination cover a number of different categories, including, Best Actor and Actress awards in Drama, Comedy and Limited Series and Best Drama, Comedy, Limited Series and TV Movie.

This year, many of the nods have gone to 2016's Westworld season 1, the sci-fi Western TV adaptation of Michael Crichton's 1973 movie.

Westworld received acclaim from viewers and critics, with many praising its blending of strong sci-fi themes with the authentic Western setting.

The series has picked up a massive 22 nominations for the 2017 awards, with the show being nominated for Best Drama and Sir Anthony Hopkins, Thandie Newton and Evan Rachel-Wood all seeing acting nods.

This means that HBO will no doubt once again enjoy success at this year's awards - despite the fact that Game of Thrones is this year airing too late to be eligible.

Outside of Westworld,  Stranger ThingsBetter Call Saul, Fargo and The Handmaid's Tale all saw various nominations, with House of Cards also seeing nods despite a mediocre reception to the new season.

One of the biggest omissions for the nominations was The Leftovers, with fans decrying the almost complete lack of attention the show has received by the Emmys.

The show recently finished its third and final season, which enjoyed rapturous acclaim from fans.
