Who Do You Think You Are? reveals Danny Dyer is related to royalty

Danny Dyer is related to two English kings, an upcoming episode of Who Do You Think You Are? has revealed.

The Eastenders actor appeared on an episode of the show that will air this week, which revealed that he's distantly related to royalty.

The premise of the show sees celebrities explore their ancestry to discover where they came from, with notable guests such as Stephen Fry, John Hurt and Boris Johnson all appearing since the show began in 2004.

In the latest episode, Danny Dyer discovers that he is related to both William the Conqueror and Edward III.

As well as royal ancestry, Dyer also discovered that he has ties to Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII's adviser.

In an interview with the Radio Times, Dyer said he felt he had more in common with Cromwell than actual royalty.

“He came from a slum, I come from a slum. Cromwell left the country at 14, I started acting at 14. He was a self-taught lawyer. I'm a self-taught actor.

“Cromwell had two daughters and a son. I've got two daughters and a son. Cromwell wrote his last letter to Henry VIII begging for his life, on 24 July, which is my birthday … And I drink in the Anne Boleyn pub.”

Dyer is not the first celebrity to find out they are related to royalty on the show.

Rower Matthew Pinsent, comedian Alexander Armstrong and BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner have all traced their roots back to William I, who had nine children.

The Danny Dyer episode of Who Do You Think You Are? Will air on Thursday at 8pm on BBC 1.
