Zack Snyder sets new sci-fi film at Netflix

Rebel Moon will follow a young woman and a group of warriors battling against an evil tyrant across the galaxy.

Zack Snyder has announced that his next project for Netflix will be an epic sci-fi fantasy film titled Rebel Moon.

"The story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius,” reads it’s official plot synopsis.

“Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand."

Many fans have noted its similarity to Star Wars and in fact, the project did begin life as a film set in that universe which revolved around a group of Jedi’s unconnected to the main Skywalker story.

The idea was pitched to Lucasfilm in 2013 following the merger with Disney, first as this film and then later as a TV series but both were considered too mature for the studio.

Earlier in 2021, Snyder confirmed that Rebel Moon is no longer a Star Wars film and will instead be set in an completely original world that he’s spent a huge amount of time developing.

“I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe," he said. "Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”

Rebel Moon will be directed by Snyder and co-written by him, Army of the Dead’s Shay Hatten and 300’s Kurt Johnstad.

He said that he plans to begin production on Rebel Moon in 2022 but a concrete release date has not yet been set.
